The Father Factor

By Linda Thomas
June 2006

Father's Day is near, as you can tell by the TV and print ads urging us to get dad the (insert name of handyman gadget or lawn tool here) he really wants.

I'm lucky because I have a great father and my kids do too, but I'm aware that a lot of people didn't have someone who was encouraging, supportive or loving.

Author Stephan Poulter has written a fascinating book called The Father Factor: How Your Father's Legacy Impacts Your Career. In it he describes different kinds of dads and says there's a direct link between your father's parenting style and your success in the workplace.

He puts fathers in the categories of: super-achieving, time bomb, passive, absent and compassionate/mentor.

The "time-bomb" father, for example, explodes in anger at his family and situations around him. His kids tend to know how to read people and their moods. The time-bomb children have intuitive abilities which make them good at jobs that involve management or negotiating. But they also have trouble feeling safe and developing trust.

Interesting ideas. If you don't need it to figure out why your career isn't going the way you'd like, maybe it'll help explain why an employee is so insecure and needs constant reinforcement or why
